Q

Gelfoam™

A
  • Absorbable gelatin (porcine) → soaks up blood
thereby absorbing fibrin and forming clot

Q

Floseal™

A
  • Liquid gelatin and thrombin mixture→ applied over
bleeding area absorbing fibrin and forming clot

A

Oxidized regenerated cellulose → clot forms on
contact with blood and material swells to form haemostatic gel

Q

Bipolar

A
  • Circuit complete at tip of forceps
  • Current only flows through tissue between forceps
  • Precise (i.e. neuro surgery)

Q

Monopolar

A
  • Requires return electrode to complete circuit (diathermy
    plate/REM)
  • Place on area of shaved skin with large muscle mass to disperse
    current

Q
A
  • Do not place over bony prominences
  • Never cut plate to size
  • Do not place where fluid can seep under plate
  • Placed as close to operative site as possible
  • Placed after the patient is positioned to prevent creasing and
    lifting of plate
  • Not over site of metal implant (hip, knee replacement) as current
can disperse to implant and generate intense heat
  • Do not use damaged plate
  • Document plate site and skin condition on plate removal
