perio 4c Flashcards
1
Q
Haemostasis
Internal Pressure
A
Digital (finger)
- Packs/Patties
- Bone Wax (bone oozes considerably)
2
Q
Chemical Haemostasis
A
-Gelfoam™-
-Floseal™
-Surgicel™-
3
Q
Gelfoam™
A
- Absorbable gelatin (porcine) → soaks up blood
thereby absorbing fibrin and forming clot
4
Q
Floseal™
A
- Liquid gelatin and thrombin mixture→ applied over
bleeding area absorbing fibrin and forming clot
5
Q
Surgicel™
A
Oxidized regenerated cellulose → clot forms on
contact with blood and material swells to form haemostatic gel
6
Q
Hot Thermal Haemostasis
A
- Diathermy
- Ligasure
7
Q
Diathermy
A
(electrosurgery - cut/coag)
8
Q
Ligasure (seals vessel)
A
seals vessel)
9
Q
Haemostasis other
A
Harmonic Scalpel (ultrasonic)
10
Q
Principles of Electrosurgery
A
Bipolar
Monopolar
11
Q
Bipolar
A
- Circuit complete at tip of forceps
- Current only flows through tissue between forceps
- Precise (i.e. neuro surgery)
12
Q
Monopolar
A
- Requires return electrode to complete circuit (diathermy
plate/REM) - Place on area of shaved skin with large muscle mass to disperse
current
13
Q
A
14
Q
A
- Do not place over bony prominences
- Never cut plate to size
- Do not place where fluid can seep under plate
- Placed as close to operative site as possible
- Placed after the patient is positioned to prevent creasing and
lifting of plate - Not over site of metal implant (hip, knee replacement) as current
can disperse to implant and generate intense heat - Do not use damaged plate
- Document plate site and skin condition on plate removal
