Haemostasis
The halting of blood flow or haemorrhage at the surgical site
Types of Bleeding
- Venous/Arterial
- Major bleeding/general ooze
Natural Process of haemostasis
Vascular constriction
- Adherence and clumping of platelets to damaged/cut site
- Platelet plug formed
- Thrombin formed (Prothrombin, thromboplastin & calcium ions)
- Thrombin + fibrinogen → Fibrin
- Fibrin reinforces platelet plug → Strong haemostatic plug
Haemostasis
External Mechanical
-
Pressure (dressing)
- Packing (Cavity i.e. vagina, rectum, nose)
- Tourniquet (Extremities)
Internal Mechanical haemostasis
Haemostat -
- Ligature - Strand of material utilised to tie around the lumen of a
vessel to mechanically seal cut end (absorbable/non-absorbable)
- Ligating clips – permanently occludes vessel.
Haemostat
- Temporarily occludes blood vessel
