organ donation Flashcards
pathways to donation
1.) brain dead
2.) circulatory death
3.) tissue only
death meaning
irreversible cessation of the circulatory part of the body
irrevarsible cessation of all function of the brain
process of brain death
severe brain injury - brain swelling - increase pressure- reduce blood flow - cell death
coma vs brain dead
coma—- recovery or
coma — persistent coma or brain dead
persistent coma
the brain stem is intact, they will remain the ability to breath while being unconscious
diagnosis of brain dead
does not mean total death of the brain, reflex movements can still occur, these reflexes do not require any invovlement of the brain
brain dead exclusions
involvement of drugs, electrolyte, metabolic causes of coma, hypothermia, hypotension
brain dead certification, clinical testing
response to pain, response to lightgag reflex, cough reflex, corneal reflexes, respiratory function, oculovestibular reflex
time of death
is recorded when the certification of brain dead is completed.
brain stem brain death
controls basic, vital functions, wakefulness, breathing, temperature. therefore if lost, the patient can never wake, breath and bood pressure eventually falls
cerebrum brain dead
is involved in all conscious functions, including sensation , movement, memory, and thought. if function is lost, ptient cannot feel, see, hear and remember.
