Performance Enhancing Drugs Flashcards
Anabolic-Androgenic Steroids
Synthetic version of testosterone.
What are steroids prescribed for?
Treat hormone related issues, cancer/Aids related muscle loss, low red blood cell count, certain forms of breast cancer.
Cycling
Taking steroids off and on, providing a rest period between cycles.
Pyramiding
Slowly increasing the steroid dosage, then titrating down after maximum peak is reached.
Stacking
Using several steroids at once, while mixing methods of administration.
Plateauing
Overlapping the use of different steroids and methods of use to avoid developing tolerance.
Mechanism of Action
Increase number of androgen receptors responsible for muscle size and strength, spiking calcium.
Sympathomimetics
Endogenous agonists that mimic the action of hormones active in the sympathetic response (adrenaline, etc.)
Stimulants
Nicotine, caffeine, and adrafinil. Used to increase energy, endurance, and awake time.
Diuretics
Misused for rapid weight loss and to flush out banned performance enhancing substances.
Beta-blockers
Misused for cardiovascular effects to promote smooth muscle relaxation and to quell performance anxiety.
Erythropoietin
Enhance red blood cell production.
Blood doping
The process by which a person uses donor blood or their own previously harvested blood to increase red blood cells which increases availability of oxygen provided to muscles.
Synthetic Oxygen Carriers
Delivered via blood doping to decrease lactic acid, thereby promoting increased aerobic fitness and endurance.
Xanthine
Ergogenic/thermogenic aid that decreases body fat and aids in wakefulness. Naturally found in chocolate and tea.
