Crisis
Any event causing substantial distress and profound disruption to a person’s normal day to day activities.
Two Types of crisis
- Situational
- Developmental or Maturational
Developmental crisis
Can occur during maturation when an individual takes on a new life role.
Situational Crisis
An event or problem occurs which leads to a disruption in normal psychological functioning.
Brief or time-limited interventions
Plans are immediate, clear, and broken down into hourly or daily increments.
Crisis Plans
-Focus on immediate events, not irrelevant long-term stressors.
De-escalation Skills
-Speaking calmly
-Providing low levels of sensory stimulation
-Giving client personal space
-Avoiding blaming or threatening statements
Suicidality in Substance Users
Is substantially higher among persons with SUD, particularly those with a comorbid mental health disorder.10-14 x greater likelihood of death by suicide.
Who carries the greatest risk of suicide?
Those with alcohol or opioid dependence
Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale
Test that measures suicidal risk in four domains:
1. severity
2. intensity
3. suicidal behavior
4. lethality
Suicide Specific Intentions and Actions
A form of self-harm with intent to commit suicide.
Non-suicidal self-injury
Direct, intentional harm to one’s bodily tissue for reasons not otherwise socially sanctioned (like tattoos).
When should you assess for suicide risk?
At the onset of the therapeutic relationship and at frequent intervals thereafter.
Populations at higher risk of suicide include..
- Those with co-occurring mental disorders
- LGBTQIA+
- Racial and ethnic minorities
- Men aged 85 and older.
- Men and women between the ages of 45 and 54.
