What must AP differ between?
Primary and secondary diagnosis. When a mental illness develops after an SUD, a full detox is needed to diagnose the disorder.
What does effective treatment consist of?
Treating the most problematic symptoms first, regardless of when they appeared in the client’s life.
Cross-cutting symptoms
Ex: When individuals with a depressive disorder experience sadness, anhedonia, and even psychotic symptoms, all symptoms that can occur with psychoactive substance misuse or withdrawal.
Are individuals with trauma and adverse childhood experiences at higher risk of SUD, mental disorders, or both?
Yes
Examples of cross-cutting symptoms
Psychosis, delusions, hallucination, suicidal ideation, emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, disorganized speech, compulsions, sleep disturbances, paranoia.
Sequential Treatment
The client receives treatment for one condition, followed by treatment for another.
Parallel Treatment
The client participates in two treatments concurrently, one for each condition.
Integrated Treatment
Clients are provided all-inclusive treatment for co-occurring disorders at one time.
Psychotropic Medication
Antidepressants, mood stabilizers, antipsychotics
