what is dyspepsia
inexact term to describe number of upper abdominal symptoms
what can dyspepsia encompass
epigastric pain, heart burn, early fullness
what are some organic causes of dyspepsia
peptic ulcers (most common), NSAIDs, cancer
what are some functional causes of dyspepsia
no evidence of structural disease, normally associated with other GI diseases eg IBS
what is peptic ulcer disease
break in epithelial cells causing inflammation, is often nocturnal and common in duodenum
what can cause peptic ulcers
H pylori, NSAIDs
how do you diagnose H pylori
gastric biopsy, urease test, serology (IgA), stool
how do you treat H pyloric
triple therapy: PPI + amoxycillin + clarithromycin OR PPI + metronidazole + clarithromycin
what drugs can be given for peptic ulcers
antacids, PPI eg omeprazole, H2 antagonists eg randitine
