1
Q

When can you descend below MSA?

A

IFR and under positive radar control. Can descend to minimum radar vectoring altitude
When established on approved approach or holding procedure
When conducting visual manoeuvre

Q

What’s the difference between CEO and NEO fuel system?

A

CEO:
6 main fuel pumps
Center tank has fuel pumps, with associated pb on overhead panel. When all pumps on, center pumps preferentially supply engine over wing pumps.

NEO:
4 main fuel pumps
FLSCU controls transfer valve. When valve open, file from inner tank pump flows through jet pump - creates suction moving fuel from center to related inner tank.

CEO: fuel pumped from center tank to engine. NEO: fuel transferred from center tank to inner tank.

Q

Minimum Fuel

A

All planned aerodrome options have been reduced to a specific aerodrome of intended landing.
Any change to the existing clearance may result in landing with less than the planned Final Reserve.
This is not an emergency situation but an indication that an emergency situation is possible, should any additional delay occur - no priority handling.

Q

Fire Loops. How many and how do they work?

A

The engines and APU each have a fire and overheat detection system consisting of:
Two identical detection loops (A & B)
Fire Detection Unit

When both loops detect heat, fire warning.

If one loop has a fault, fire warning when just the remaining loop detects heat.

Also warning if break occurs in both loops within 5s

Q

Permitted tech log fuel discrepancy

A

Check sum of FOB at end of last flight + fuel uplift = current FOB, within below limits. If not, maintenance action.

FOB after refuelling:
Up to 6t - 400kg discrepancy
6 - 12t - 500kg discrepancy
More than 12t - 600kg discrepancy

Q

Fuel system logic

A

Fuel usage sequence:
Center tank
Inner tank
Outer tank

CEO
Center tank pumps
500kg used from inner then center tank pumps run (to prevent IDG Cooling cause overflow)

NEO
Center tank transfer valves
Fuel transfers to inner tanks. Transfer valves close when inner tank full and reopen when 500kg used

If MODE SEL in AUTO, center pumps/transfer valves off/close 5 mins after center tank low level reached.

Outer/Inner transfer valves latch open when inner tank reaches low level 750kg

Some fuel diverted to cool IDG. Returns to outer tank. If outer tank full, overflows into inner tank via spill pipe.

LO LVL warning when one tank below 750kg. Independent from fuel quantity indications.

Total fuel load approx 18000kg

A321 has one (one each side!) big wing tank
