was a small fishing village until 15th Century
1472 Portuguese settlers named it Lagos
20th Century was under British rule and was made the capital of Nigeria

what is the importance of Lagos
when Nigerian government moved to capital Abuja Lagos was still centre of trade and finance in W Africa. It has a major international airport, a busy seaport and population is still growing
what are the economic and social opportunities
economic - employment, there are more jobs than anywhere in Nigeria
social - education, there are more schools and unis than anywhere else, healthcare is available but not free

it has widened the gap between the rich and the poor. Economy has lead to wealth for some but 60% live in slums

Olus Osuna is a landfill site, a city has grown around it. 500 work at the dump sorting waste, picking out valuables to sell. Some live at the dump building homes from recycled materials
