paper 2 Global Pattern of Urban Change Flashcards
How is the worlds urban population changing
over half the worlds population now lives in cities
By 2050 it is estimated 70% of the population will live in cities
What is the process of people moving from rural to cities called
urbanisation
What are megacities, name 3 and how many are there
population over 10 million
Tokyo, new York Mexico \city
over 20 and rising each year
How do rates of urbanisation vary around the world
rates vary between continents
highest rates poor LIC (Asia Africa) where majority live in rural areas so rural migration is high Lower in HIC Europe and N America
exception S America where ecconomy is new
where rural migration is high and population of city is young what impact does this have on the population
Increase because of natural migration
why has urbanisation slowed in HICs
majority of population live in a city already and population there is aging so natural increase has slowed
What is natural increase
difference between birth and death rate
what is population growth
when birth rate is higher than death rate so population grows
what is natural decrease
birth rate is lower than death rate and population falls
why does world population grow
on average global birth rate is higher than death rate
there are differences between continents
where are most megacities and why
Asia - it is where half of the worlds population live.
majority of the population still live in rural areas
what factors lead to urbanisation (4)
migration - rural migrants move for education
natural increase - younger population in many cities, healthcare is better so lower death rate
economic development - cities grow economically creating jobs and attracting people
location - historically towns grow on rivers, coasts and transport routes.
How have megacities grown
cities don’t grow at a constant rate
some grew at a constant rate others grew slowly and now urbanising rapidly
where will worlds megacities in the future will be
they don’t exist yet but China plan to merge cities to create one big one.
