Pain Module Flashcards
Nociceptive/somatogenic pain
pain with an identifiable cause
hyperalgesia
extreme sensitivity to pain
Neuralgia
severe, brief and often repetitive attacks of lightening like or throbbing pain due to damage to peripheral nerves
paresthesia
spontaneous unpleasant sensations
neuropathic pain
pain resulting from abnormal processing of sensory information by the PNS and CNS due to damage to the nervous system
Neuromodulation
inhibition of further pain stimuli by specialized neurotransmitters
pain tolerance
the amount of pain intensity a person is willing to endure before showing overt pain responses
psychogenic pain
pain for which there is no known physical cause
visceral pain
poorly localized pain arising from internal organs and the abdomen
nociceptors
sense cellular damage due to heat, chemicals or pressure
A-delta fibers
fast pain
C fibers
slow pain
Periaqueductal gray (PAG)
sends impulses down from midbrain to inhibit pain signals
Substance P
increases pain transmission
endorphins
inhibit pain transmission
