Seizure recognition
Aura
Sudden unresponsiveness
LOC
Muscle jerking/twitching
Stiffening of muscles
Loss of tone
Incontinence
Best immediate response: seizures
Remove nearby objects that may cause injury (sharp/hard)
Lay person on side
Note onset and end of seizure
Length >5 min - call 911
Do not hold person down or stop mvmts
Do not place objects/fingers in mouth
Concussion recognition
Headache
Nausea
Balance problems
Fatigue
Blurry vision
Sensitivity to light or noise
Numbness or tingling
Cognitive, emotional, or sleep-related deficits
Best immediate response: concussion
Stop activity immediately
Monitor for worsening sxs
Consult healthcare professional promptly for a thorough eval - even if sxs are mild
911 if:
LOC
Repeated vomiting
Severe HA
Seizures
Unequal pupil size
Prolonged confusion
Slurred speech
Weakness or numbness
Unusual behavior
Difficulty waking up
Dehydration recognition
Mild: thirst, dry mouth/lips
Mod: very dry mouth, cracked lips, HA, sunken eyes, poor skin turgor, postural hypotension
severe: rapid/weak pulse, confusion, lethargy, rapid breathing, seizures, inability to cry/urinate
Best immediate response: dehydration
Identify sxs early
Drink water or oral rehydration solutions
If nauseous - take small frequent sips
Severe cases may req IV fluids
Heat exhaustion recognition
Profuse sweating
Nausea
HA
Shallow, rapid breathing
Weak rapid pulse
Pale
Temp norm or slightly elev
Exhaustion, collapse
Unconsciousness
Pupils normal
Heat stroke recognition
No sweating
Nausea
HA
Labored breathing
Strong, rapid pulse
Flushed or grey skin
Very elev temp (106-110)
Exhaustion, collapse, convulsions
Pupils contract then dilate
Best immediate response: heat exhaustion
Hydrate
Move to cooler environment
Sip water
Cool shower or compress
Remove tight fitting clothes/layers
Act quickly
911 if continued vomiting
Best immediate response: heat stroke
Call 911
Move person to cooler place
Do not provide fluids
Cancer recognition/early warning signs
Unexplained weight loss
