orthopedics knee injuries Flashcards
sports knee injuries include
ligament tears, meniscus tears, patellar dislocation, knee dislocation, tendon rupture
ACL function
prevent anterior movement of tibia on femur. o: medial lateral femoral condyle, I: ant/lateral medial tibia
PCL function
prevent anterior movement of tibia on femur. o: posterior lateral condyle. I: posterior tibia,
ACL tear senario
NOT contact
PCL tear senario
contact. “dashboard”
ACL symptoms
pop, immediate swelling and pain, difficult to bear weight
diagnosis tests for ACL
lachman, anterior drawer, pivit shift
meniscus composition/function
mostly collagen type I, increases surface between tibia and femur, shock absorb and stability. mainly circumferential fibers to spread out load.
meniscus vascular supply
geniculate arteries- decreased supply with age
meniscus tear symptoms
gradual swelling, full ROM, tender, medial more common
tendon rupture
qaud or patellar. can’t extend knee. risk- steroids, floraquinolones, DM, eccentric muscle contraction
