Oral glucose gel - Actions (3)
A
- Glucose is the main energy source for the bodys’ cells, especially in the brain
- Glucose preparation is rapidly absorbed from oral/buccal mucosa
- Causes an increase in blood glucose concentration
Onset approx 10 minutes

A
Treat hypoglycaemia when pt is conscious and able to swallow

A
Impaired or absent swallow/gag reflex

A
Adult & Paediatric
1 x tube of 15g glucose orally
May be repeated x 1 after 15/60 if BGL still

Oral glucose gel - Notes
A
Pts should swallow the entire contents of the tube where possible to maximise the rise in BGL
Pts who respond to oral glucose gel should eat to prevent later development of further hypoglycaemia
Re check BGL
Gel liquefies when over 30deg, but is still useable.
