Metoclopramide - Actions (2)
A
- Antiemetic, centrally acting on the brain stem
- Increases gastric emptying
Onset IV 3-15 min, duration 30min

Metoclopramide - Use (2)
A
- Prevent vomiting
- when narcotic analgesic is to be administered
- high spinal injury
- serious eye injury
- suspected ischaemic chest pain - Treat nausea and vomiting

Metoclopramide - Adverse effects (5)
A
Uncommon with usual doses, occasionally: 1. Drowsiness 2. Lethargy 3. Dry mouth 4. Oculogyric crisis, facial spams 5. Speech difficulties Side effects may be more common in dehydrated adolescents

Metoclopramide - Contraindications (2)
A
- Previous reaction
2. GI bleeding

Metoclopramide - Precaution
A
Concomitant phenothiazine use will increase likelihood of side effects.

A
Adult - 10mg (over 2 mins if IV)
Single dose only
Give prior to narcotic administration
