A
Electrolyte - utilised in both electrical and mechanical actions of the myocardium

A
1g in 10ml (100mg in 1ml)

Calcium chloride - Action
A
Opposes the action of high serum potassium on the myocardium
Onset several minutes, duration 30-90 minutes

Calcium chloride - Uses (2)
A
- Emergency treatment of hyperkalaemia
2. Prolonged hypotension post magnesium administration, if unresponsive to fluid

Calcium chloride - Adverse effects (2)
A
Rare with nominated use
- Tissue necrosis if extravasates from vein
- Precipitates out in contact with bicarbonate

Calcium chloride - Contraindication
A
Known hypersensitivity

Calcium chloride - Dose
A
Adult & Paediatric - 10mg/kg IV over 2 minutes (0.1ml/kg)
Repeat once, if required
