- Broad spectrum antibiotic - especially effective against gram-negative bacteria
- Effective crossing of blood brain barrier

A
Suspected meningoccal disease, in acutely ill patients

- Hypersensitivity reactions (not common)
- Diarrhoea
- Skin rash

A
Known sensitivity to cephalosporins

Ceftriaxone - Precaution
A
It is possible that 20% patients with penicillin allergy may be sensitive to ceftriaxone

Ceftriaxone - Dose
A
Adult & Paediatric - 50mg/kg to a total of 2g (40kg)
Make up to 10ml with normal saline, give over 2-4 minute.
May be given IM (if over 1g give in 2 doses)
