Fast acting synthetic narcotic analgesic

A
600mcg in 2ml (30mcg/0.1ml)

A
Acts on the central nervous system by binding with the opioid receptors

Fentanyl - Uses (2)
A
- Management of moderate to severe pain
2. Safe analgesic alternative in known allergy to morphine sulphate

Fentanyl - Adverse effects (5)
A
- Central nervous system depression
- Respiratory depression
- Nausea/vomiting
- Occasionally - bradycardia
- Rigidity of the diaphragm, intercostals and jaw (rare)

Fentanyl - Contraindications (4)
A
- Known allergy or previous reaction to fentanyl
- Bleeding or bilateral occluded nose within
- Altered level of consciousness
- Children under the age of 1 year

Fentanyl - Doses
A
NOTE ADD 0.1ML TO PRIME DEVICE
1-5 yrs (20kg) 30mcg (0.1ml) then 30mcg @ 10/60
5-12 yrs (20-40kg) 60mcg (0.2ml) then 60mcg @ 10/60
Small adult (40-70kg) 120mcg (0.3ml) then 60mcg @ 10/60
Adult (>70kg) 180mcg (0.6ml) then 60mcg @ 10/60

Fentanyl - Special notes (6)
A
- Max 0.5ml per nostril
- Doses of morphine post fentanyl at half doses
- Doses of ketamine post fentanyl at half doses
- No fentanyl if max morphine has been given (AP)
- Antiemetics should only be given if pt is nauseous/vomiting prior to fentanyl
- Never administer IN fentanyl IV
