A
Reverses the effects of narcotic analgesics
IV onset 1-2 mins, duration 30-45 mins
IM timing unknown

Naloxone - Uses (3)
A
- Coma
- Drug overdose and poisoning
- Use in situations where there is significant decrease in level of consciousness; where there is hypoventilation and/or loss of protective reflexes; and where overdose of narcotics cannot be positively excluded

Naloxone - Adverse effects (3)
A
- May precipitate acute withdrawal syndrome in narcotic addicts
- Occasional aggressive behaviour following reversal
- Nausea and vomiting

A
Known hypersensitivity

A
Adult - 1st dose 0.8mg IM - 2nd dose 0.8mg IM OR - 2nd dose 0.4mg IV increments fast push - may repeat IV dose up to 3 times (to max 2mg) Paediatric - 0.01mg/kg IM/IV - max 3 x calculated dose
