What are the indications of use for oral glucose?
A known diabetic with an altered LOC but is still able to swallow.
What is the drug action of oral glucose?
Elevates blood glucose levels.
What are the contraindications for oral glucose?
Unconscious, known diabetic who has not taken insulin for days, unable to swallow
What are the side effects for oral glucose?
None is given properly, there is a risk of aspiration if the patient has an impaired or absent gag reflex.
What are the special considerations about oral glucose?
Obtain blood glucose before administration; check again 15 minutes after medication administration. Pay careful attention to the patients airway and LOC.
What is the dosage of oral glucose?
15-25 grams
What are two trade names of oral glucose?
Glutose, Insta-Glucose.
