What are the indications of use for glucagon?
Hypoglycemia
What is the drug action of glucagon?
It raises blood glucose by stimulating the liver to release stood sugar and converting fats and proteins to sugar.
What are the contraindications for glucagon?
Allergy to the drug, history of pheochromocytoma( tumor which secretes epi)
What are the side effects of glucagon?
Nausea and vomiting, hypotension, respiratory distress.
What a re some special notes about glucagon?
Drug is supplied in a powdered form and must be reconstituted in the solution supplied with the powder, patient needs to eat carbohydrates as soon as they awake and able to swallow safely, in the pediatric patient, IM glucagon should be administered before IV interventions, pregnancy category B, may be repeated in 20 minutes if no response, IV glucose must be administered if patient doesn’t respond to glucagon.
What is the usual dose of glucagon?
In the patient who can safely eat or drink, oral glucose is preferred. Adult patients ( Over 44 lbs )- 1 mg glucagon IM/ Intranasal; can repeat in 20 minutes. Pediatric patients ( less than 44 lbs )- 0.5 mg IM/Intranasal.
What are you going to monitor, report, and document after administration of glucagon?
Vital signs within 5 minutes after administration, changes in LOC, blood sugar before and after administration.
