What are some treatments for hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia?

A

Assess LOC and ABCs, high priority rapid transport and consider ALS, maintain open airway and provide oxygen, consider oral glucose or glucagon.

What is diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)?

A

The blood glucose level is elevated, typically greater than 350 Mg/Dl, because of an inadequate amount of insulin.

What are the respiratory patterns for a patient in DKA?

A

Rapid deep respirations which is an attempt by the body to blow off carbon dioxide to deuce the acid load in the body. Also called Kussmaul respirations.

Usually from hyperglycemia, will see things like altered LOC and Amy be unresponsive, rapid weak pulse, pale warm flush and dehydrated, deep rapid respirations, fruity odor to breath, nausea and vomiting.
