Oral Cavity Flashcards
What subdivision of the oral cavity is located between the lips/cheeks and the teeth/gums?
vestibule
The opening from the oral cavity that communicates with exterior environment anteriorly?
oral fissure
The opening from the oral cavity that communicates with oropharynx posteriorly?
fauces
The fold of skin that connects the lips to the gums along the midline of the superior and inferior oral vestibule?
frenulum labii
What structure is located on each cheek, lateral to the upper 2nd molar?
parotid papilla, where carotid duct enters the oral cavity
The fold of mucosa that connects base of tongue to lower gums at the midline of the oral cavity?
frenulum lingula
What structures are on either side of the frenulum lingula?
sublingual papillae where submandibular ducts enter the oral cavity
What are the elongated folds/elevations covered in mucosa, that are located lateral to the sublingual papillae in the floor of the oral cavity?
sublingual folds which is where the sublingual gland ducts enter oral cavity through multiple openings
The part of the tooth that projects beyond the gingiva?
crown
The part of the tooth that is embedded into the alveoli of mandible or maxilla?
root
The part of the tooth where the crown and the root join at the gingival line?
neck
The part of the tooth that contains vessels and nerves?
pulp cavity
The part of the tooth that connects to the pulp cavity?
root canal
The layer of the tooth that covers the crown and is extremely hard and translucent?
enamel
Why is enamel so hard?
it is made of 95% inorganic compounds
The layer of the tooth that makes up most of the tooth and is ivory in color?
dentin (70% inorganic compounds vs the 95% inorganic compounds found in enamel)
What is the pulp cavity filled with other than nerves and vessels?
dental pulp which is loose connective tissue that is lined by odontoblasts that make dentin
What attaches the root of a tooth to the alveolar process?
periodontal ligament/membrane
What attaches the periodontal ligament to the root of the tooth?
cementum
Which of these tooth compounds regenerates throughout life: enamel, dentin, cementum?
dentin and cementum both regenerate
enamel does NOT regenerate
What innervates that teeth and the periodontal ligaments?
alveolar nerves (posterior superior (V2), middle superior (V2), anterior superior (V2) and inferior alveolar (V3)
How many deciduous teeth are there total and how many of each type?
20 total: 2,1,0,2 in each quadrant
2 incisors, 1 canine, 0 pre molars and 2 molars
How many permanent teeth are there total and how many of each type?
32 total: 2,1,2,3 in each quadrant
2 incisors, 1 canine, 2 pre molars and 3 molars
When do deciduous teeth begin to erupt?
between the 4th and 8th month postnatally
When do permanent teeth begin to erupt?
between 6-8 years and continue until late teens
Which teeth tend to have 3 roots?
upper molars
which teeth tend to have 2 roots?
lower molars
Which teeth tend to have only 1 root?
all but the molars
