Oral Cancer Screening (What is Benign) Flashcards
Describe Aphthous ulceration
Common, painful, and usually dissolve very quickly, can occur due to hormone changes e.g. stress, menstrual cycle, can appear in cycles
Describe Lipoma
Can occur anywhere in the oral cavity, made up of fat and adipose tissue, yellow soft squishy feel to them, these are benign quite mobile no pain
Describe Mucocoele
Caused by trauma to the lip, causes a break in the salivary duct, so instead of saliva exiting through the duct it gets trapped in the tissue
Describe Epulis
Swelling on the gum, pyrogenic granuloma, which means a swelling on the gum, caused by chronic irritation e.g. from an amalgam edge, send away a sample for histological examination
Describe leaf fibroma
Grows underneath dentures, starts as a small epithelial outgrowth caused by chronic irritation, there is a small stalk attached to the anterior hard palate, apply LA on pedicle and then remove pedicle off and send it for examination
Denture induced hyperplasia
Caused by ill fitting dentures often worn 24/7, trauma becomes ulcerated and that’s when patients will present it. Occurring because patient hasn’t removed denture since it was inserted, and treatment involves removing of excess tissue, however if the patient continues doing this the tissue will just grow back
Describe Papilloma
Benign, caused by low risk HPV types, overgrowth of the mucosa caused by contact with virus particles
Describe Torus Palatinus
Hard tissue overgrowths that are benign (harmless), only becomes a problem when it becomes such a size that it becomes traumatized during mastication
Describe Tori Mandibularis
Within realms of normality, however, gets bigger with age, can be removed under LA, by removing some of the bone, are removed due to size as once they are big enough due to age can become traumatized due to size
