Dynamic occlusion Flashcards
1
Q
describe occlusion
A
the contact relationships of teeth or equivalent
2
Q
describe articulation
A
the dynamic relationships of the teeth when in sliding contact
3
Q
describe Jaw relationship
A
Positional relationship which the mandible bears to the maxilla
4
Q
What are the vertical jaw relationships and dimensions?
A
- Rest/Postural Position
- Intercuspal position (ICP)
- Retruded Contact Position (RCP)
- Occlusal vertical dimension (OVD)
- Rest vertical dimension (RVD)
- Freeway space (FWS)
5
Q
Describe rest/postural position
A
- At rest - teeth apart
- How maintained?
minimal muscle activity or…
Is it governed by muscle elasticity - It remains reproducible throughout life in both dentate and edentulous subjects
- Important with full dentures
6
Q
describe occlusal vertical dimension (OVD)
A
- the face height with the teeth in ICP
- measured between two arbitrary points
- governed by the height of the teeth
- important to get OVD correct
7
Q
describe rest/postural vertical dimension (RVD)
A
- face height with mandible in rest/postural position
- measured between two arbitrary points
- this should not alter significantly throughout life
8
Q
describe freeway space (FWS)
A
- the space between teeth in rest position
- difference between RVD and OVD
- 2-5mm
9
Q
describe balanced occlusion concept
A
- Tooth contact during excursions at both working and non-working sides
- Ideal for F/F dentures:
Maintains stability
control cusp shape / tooth position and orientation - Difficult to achieve because teeth rarely in contact
- cannot exist in a normal dentate occlusion
