Justification & Interpretation Flashcards
1
Q
Bitewings and paralleling periapicals
A
- similar techniques
- film is parallel to long axis of tooth
- x-ray beam at 90 degrees to film & tooth
- long cone should be used - a near parallel beam
2
Q
describe paralleling technique
A
- accurate images
- positioning devices determine the angulations
- reproducible on different visits by different operators
- relative positions of the film, teeth and x-ray beam are always maintained
3
Q
selection criteria
A
- systemically developed statements designed to assist the clinician and patient in making decisions about appropriate healthcare for certain specific circumstances
- guidelines are not a rigid constraint on clinical practice but concepts of good practice against which needs of individual patients can be considered
4
Q
recommended radiographs for uniform pocketing <6mm
A
horizontal bitewings
5
Q
recommended radiographs for pockets >6mm
A
vertical bitewings supplemented with parallel periapical views if perio-endo lesion suspected
6
Q
what radiographs would be utilised for irregular pocketing?
A
- bitewings +/- paralleling periapicals
7
Q
which radiographs to use for anterior teeth
A
paralleling periapicals
8
Q
what are some radiographic challenges?
A
- difficult to take paralleling films of mobile teeth
- difficult to use film holders & bite blocks if opposing teeth are missing
- full mouth periapical films have been considered the “gold standard” for periodontal disease but -
- always consider whether the taking of a radiograph is going to change the management of the patient
