Opioid And Nonopioids Flashcards
Nonopioid analgesics: Salicylate
Aspirin
Nonopioid analgesics: Non-Salicylate
Tylenol (acetaminophen)
NSAIDs
Ibuprofen, naproxen, celebrix
Salicylate vs. Nonsalicylate
Salicylate has anti-inflammatory effect, nonsalicylate does not
Common problem with patients taking opioids:
Slow motility and constipation
Opioid naive patient:
Higher risk of resp depression (resp < 10/min), give lower dose first b/c don’t know reaction to drug
Opioid antagonist:
Reverse opioid agonist effect (inhibit pain), which means pain will return
Opioid antagonist meds:
Naloxone, methadone
Opioid antagonist meds:
Naloxone, methadone
Opioid Pain meds
Severe pain: hydrocodone,
Severe acute pain: sufentanil,
Chronic pain: morphine sulfate
Morphine sulfate routes:
PO, nasal, IM, IV, SubQ, rectal
Transdermal route of opioid:
Not for opioid naive patient,
Don’t apply heat over top because increases med absorption
