Cholinergic Drugs Flashcards
Which nervous system do cholinergic drugs affect?
Parasympathetic nervous system
What is parasympathetic nervous system in charge of?
Rest and digest
What do acetylcholine (Ach) do?
Send messages from nerve cells to other cells in the body
What are the Ach receptors and what do they do?
Muscarinic receptors: stimulate smooth muscle
Nicotinic receptors: stimulate skeletal muscle
What caused Alzheimer’s?
Dysfunction of Ach
What do acetylcholinsterase (AchE) do?
Inactivate Ach, so it’s used to treat Alzheimer’s
Cholinergic crisis cause and s/s
Caused by overdoes.
S/s include NVD, bradycardia, hypotension, stomach pain, resp depression
Cholinergic drugs interact with what class of drugs?
Aminoglycoside (a class of antibiotics), corticosteroids, and other cholinergics (b/c of high risk of toxicity)
What is atropine and what does it do?
Antimuscarinic, cholinergic blocking, increase hr, dilate pupil, decrease urine
Antidote of cholinergic drugs
Atropine!
