Oncology Flashcards
Bleomycin
A cytotoxic agent that can cause lung fibrosis
HPV 6 and 11
Non-carcinogenic but associated with genital warts
CEA
Carcinoembryonic antigen is a tumour marker for colorectal cancer and used to monitor disease activity
Cisplatin
Associated with hypomagnesaemia which can cause seizures
Kartagener’s syndrome
Immotile cilia associated with recurrent sinusitis and liver in the upper left quadrant
Lynch syndrome
Autosomal dominant condition that leads to high rates of colorectal cancer
MEN type IIb
Associated with pheochromocytomas and is autosomal dominant
-medullary carcinoma of the thyroid
Methotrexate
Associated with myelosuppression, liver fibrosis and mucositis
Doxorubicin
Associated with cardiomyopathy as it is an anthracycline
Neoplastic spinal cord compression
High dose oral dexamethasone and then MR scan
CA 19-9
Can be used to monitor pancreatic cancer disease activity
PET scan
Shows the degree of glucose uptake by cells
Calcitonin
Tumour marker for medullary thyroid cancer
Gardeners syndrome (FAP)
- autosomal dominant
- may develop retroperitoneal desmoid tumours
- increased risk of malignancy due to polyps
- increased risk of thyroid cancer
- APC gene mutation
Lung adenocarcinoma
- most common in non-smokers
- peripheral lesion
Dexamethasone
Used to supress nausea and vomiting with intracranial tumours
Spinal cord compression
Back pain is the earliest and most common symptom
CA 15-3
Tumour marker used to monitor breast cancer
Squamous cell lung cancer
Strong association with smoking and occurs centrally around the bronchus
Bone metastases
In women this is most likely to come from breast cancer
Suspected neoplastic spinal cord compression
Need whole spin MR scan
SVCO
Most commonly caused by small cell lung cancer
Nivolumab
An immune checkpoint inhibitor used to treat solid cancers
