Haemorrhage post tonsillectomy
If it occurs within 5-10 days often due to infection and manage with IV antibiotics
Vestibular neuronitis
- unilateral ear pain
- vertigo
- no associated deafness
- nystagmus
Ramsay Hunt syndrome
- severe deep ear pain
- vertigo
- facial palsy
- vesicular lesions that can affect tongue
Chronic rhinosinusitis
Red flags include unilateral symptoms and constitutional symptoms
Batonella infection
Generalised systemic symptoms in the presence of cat scratch
Branchial cyst
Located at anterior border of sternocleidomastoid, soft and fluctuant and can become worse with infection
Tachyphylaxis
Increasing dose required for the same affect
Trigeminal neuralgia
Shooting pain across the cheek that can be triggered by touch.
Ludwig’s angina
Infection to the floor of the mouth and soft tissues of neck that needs urgent ABC assessment
Aspirin
Avoid in asthma as it can cause Samter’s triad and nasal polyposis
Ciproflaxacin
Used to treat otitis externa in diabetics as it covers for pseudomonas
Haemophilus influenzae
Common cause of bacterial otitis media
Otitis media
Oral antibiotics are indicated with perforation
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma
Suspect in epistaxis and Chinese heritage
Vertebrobasiliar ischaemia
Elderly patients with dizziness on neck extension
