Lymecycline
Tetracyclines increase the risk of idiopathic intracranial hypertension
Brain abscess
- headache
- fever
- focal neurology
- ring-enhancing lesion on CT
Wernicke’s dysphasia
Speech is fluent but words often incorrect with abnormal comprehension and impaired repetition
Idiopathic intracranial hypertension
If stable and no cause found then manage with weight loss
Temporal lobe epilepsy
Associated with automatizations such as plucking at clothes
Cluster headaches
Commonly triggered by alcohol
Cavernous sinus syndrome
Commonly caused by cavernous sinus tumour and causes pain, ophthalmoplegia, proptosis and Horner’s syndrome
Essential tremor
Intention tremor so worse on movement such as holding arms out
Clopidogrel
Preferred antiplatelet for secondary prevention post stroke
Ataxic gait
Wide base with a loss of heel to toe walking
Baclofen
First line for spasticity in multiple sclerosis or you can use gabapentin
TIA
If a patient is on warfarin or DOAC or has a bleeding disorder TIA needs urgent CT head
Parkinson’s disease
Can lead to postural hypotension due to autonomic failure
Broca’s dysphagia
Speech is not fluent, comprehension is normal but repetition is impaired
Stroke
Within 4.5hrs of onset offer thrombolysis and thrombectomy
