Invasive ductal carcinoma
Most common type of breast cancer
Screening
Offered every 3 years between the ages of 47-73 years
Breast abscess
Can develop from mastitis and can occur in women who are breast feeding
-staph. aureus
Duct ectasia
Occurs close to menopause as the duct contract
- creamy discharge from several ducts
- associated nipple inversion
Intraductal papilloma
- single duct discharge
- small amounts of blood in fluid
Herceptin
Also known as trastuzumab this is used to treat Her2 +ve breast cancer
Inflammatory breast cancer
Progressive erythema and oedema of the breast in the absence of sings of infection
Periductal mastitis
Common in smokers and may present with recurrent infection
-co-amoxiclav
Fibroadenosis
- middle aged women
- lump breasts
- pain and size related to menstruation
Snowstrom sign
Seen on ultrasound of axillary lymph nodes and indicates breast implant rupture
Neo-adjuvant chemotherapy
Can be used to try to shrink the size of tumour before surgery allowing breast conserving surgery
Wide local excision
Favoured if the mass is less than 4cm and the women wants this option
Fat necrosis
Suspect with a history of trauma and presents as a breast lump
Letrozole
Endocrine therapy used to treat ER +ve breast cancer in post menopausal women
BRCA1 and BRCA2
Inherited in an autosomal dominant manor
