Nutritional Components for Dz Flashcards
What are the 3 areas of GI Dz in which dietary management may be useful?
- Acute GI Disorders (ie. pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion)
- Fiber Responsive Disorders (ie. colitis, IBD, constipation)
- Food Hypersensitivities (ie. adverse GI/Skin reactions)
How is the diet changed for acute GI disorders? Why?
- lower fat content –> diminishes release of pancreatic/gastric digestive enzymes
- increased digestibility –> patient will use most of the available nutrients with minimal waste production
How is the diet changed for fiber responsive disorders?
increases soluble fiber content –> add small amounts of fiber to diet to firm up loose stools or help loosen firm stool
What is one consequence of adding fiber to a diet?
may increase the amount of feces produced
How is the diet changed for food hypersensitivities?
-novel proteins are used –> animals shouldn’t be sensitized to a protein they’ve never been exposed to before because no memory T-lymphocytes have been made yet
What is hydrolyzed protein?
Proteins are broken down through hydrolysis (specific enzymatic reactions) until they are so small that the body does not recognize them as antigens
What is the theory behind how hydrolyzed protein is beneficial in dietary hypersensitivities?
If the protein Is so small that the body doesn’t recognize the substance as an antigen, then the body should never become sensitized to those proteins and the proteins can still provide adequate nutrition
