Overview- Cardiac Dz Flashcards
What do the atria do?
receives blood and stores it before it enters the ventricles
What doe the ventricles do?
pump blood out of the heart
What type of blood does the right ventricle pump and to where?
deoxygenated blood thru pulmonary valve to pulmonary circulation
What type of blood does the left ventricle pump and to where?
oxygenated blood thru aortic valve to systemic circulation?
Which ventricle is thicker and why?
left because the blood has to go further
Another name for the right AV valve
tricuspid valve
When does the tricuspid valve open?
when the pressure from the amount of blood being stored forces it open
When does the tricuspid valve close?
When the pressure in the right ventricle > pressure in right atrium
What is the left AV valve also called?
bicuspid
mitral
What do the semilunar valves control?
blood flow out of the heart
Where is the pulmonary valve and what flows thru it to where?
right side of heart
deoxygenated blood flows thru
pulmonary circulation
Where is the aortic valve located and what flows thru it to where?
left side
oxygenated blood
to systemic circulation
What are common clinical signs of heart Dz and their pathology?
- Exercise Intolerance: inadequate blood circulation decreases amount of O2 being delivered to brain & muscles
- Syncope: arrhythmias, inappropriate circulation, secondary to paroxysmal cough
- Pulse Deficits
- Coughing/Altered Breathing: result of cardiac Dz affecting respiratory system
- Cyanosis: inappropriate oxygenation due to inadequate circulation
What is a paroxysmal cough/what does it involve?
involves frequent and violent coughing that can make it hard for a person to breathe
What are some Hx questions to ask for cardiac Dz?
- Do the parents/siblings have any Hx of heart Dz
- HW status
- When did clinical signs first develop?
- Better or worse at play vs rest?
- Any progression since first noticed?
- Current diet?
