Q

What are common clinical signs of heart Dz and their pathology?

A
  • Exercise Intolerance: inadequate blood circulation decreases amount of O2 being delivered to brain & muscles
  • Syncope: arrhythmias, inappropriate circulation, secondary to paroxysmal cough
  • Pulse Deficits
  • Coughing/Altered Breathing: result of cardiac Dz affecting respiratory system
  • Cyanosis: inappropriate oxygenation due to inadequate circulation

Q

What are some Hx questions to ask for cardiac Dz?

A
  • Do the parents/siblings have any Hx of heart Dz
  • HW status
  • When did clinical signs first develop?
  • Better or worse at play vs rest?
  • Any progression since first noticed?

3 Nursing Strategies for heart dz

A

Rest
O2 therapy
IV access

17
Q

Precautions with cardiac patients

A
  • avoid unneeded stress
  • stop any procedure that seems to be making clinical signs worse
  • give patient frequent breaks from handling
18
Q

What should owners know about cardiac dz?

A
  • condition is irreversible
  • progression can often be slowed by meds but not cured
  • not all cardiac dz results in consistently decreased QoL
  • Dz may progress to a point where patient can’t be kept comfortable
