Nutrition for Diabetics Flashcards
3 Goals of dietary management in diabetes mellitus
- Reversing obesity
- Minimize postprandial serum glucose fluctuation
- Maintain consistency in feeding schole and caloric intake
Why is obesity problematic for diabetes Tx?
fat leads to inability of body’s tissue to properly respond to insulin
What things can you do to reverse obesity?
- decrease caloric intake gradually
- increase fiber intake
- initiate exercise program
Why does exercise help maintain better glucose homeostasis?
it improves absorption of insulin at injection site thru increased SQ tissue and muscle perfusion
What 2 things should you increase to minimize postprandial serum glucose fluctuation?
dietary fiber and complex carbohydrates
Why does fiber help reduce fluctuation?
not fully known; theory is that it slows absorption time of material in digestive tract
Is there a difference between soluble vs insoluble fiber?
No, but increasing insoluble fiber may lead to constipation and decreased diet palatability
How should diabetic pets be fed?
consistent amount of calories each day
meals should be fed in conjunction with administration of insulin
avoid feeding one large meal a day
