when should you introduce breastfeeding to a baby
within the first HOUR of life!
(aids in stimulation of milk production, uterus contraction and helps baby learn to nurse)
breastfeeding = increased oxytocin = lower risk of hemorrhage for mom!
how often should a well nourished infant “void” and “stool”
pee (void) - 6-8 times daily
Stool (poo) - 4-6 times daily
how fast should babies typically gain weight?
1/2 oz to 1 oz of weight daily!
weight should double by 5 months and triple by a year
what things does breast milk contain that may help babies immune systems
- bacterial/viral antibodies (secretory IgA)
- macrophages
- nucleotides
what does breast milk NOT contain, how do we supplement this? with how much??
Vitamin D
supplement with 1ml (400IU)
what can breast feeding protect babies against
- GI infections (rotavirus/giardia/shigella/ecoli)
- respiratory illnesses (wheezing/lower resp tract dz)
- H. Flu
- S. Pneumo
- 50% reduction in OM cases
how does breastfeeding act as a contraceptive
Due to suckling reflex, increases prolactin, which in return suppresses GnRH, which does not allow FSH/LH to be released, thereby amenorrhea or anovulatory menses

what three illnesses can breastfeeding decrease risk for in a mom
- breast cancer
- ovarian cancer
- T2DM
exaggerated physiologic jaundice associated with inadequate intake of breast milk, infrequent stooling, and unsatisfactory weight gain
what is this called?
breastfeeding jaundice
May present with vomiting, esophagitis, colitis with blood/mucus in stool, irritability, slow weight gain, diarrhea, rashes on skin
assocaited with GERD s/s
cows milk protein allergy or human milk allergy
along with decreased dairy intake, what else should mom avoid if she finds that her breastfeeding baby is allergic to cows milk

how long can breast milk be stored
4 days in the fridge
frozen for 6 months in freezer
when do rhythmic biting movements begin in babies
7-9 months (allows food to be introduced that requires chewing)
what allergies are typically lifelong
peanut allergies
lots of kids outgrow milk/egg allergy tho!
how many kcal/ day do infants need? what about 1 year olds? what about >1 year?
infants - 120kcal/kg/day
by 1 year - down to 90 kcal/kg/day
>1 year - 100kcal/year + 1000
(so a 9 year old eats 1900kcal)
