24 hour recall

A

Individual recounts all the food and beverages consumed in the past 24 hours or during the previous day
Times when meals or snacks are eaten are included
Disadvantage: under/overestimation, foods can be omitted if pt is embarrassed, one day can not represent normal intake

A

Written survey of food consumption during specific period of time (often 1 year period)
Disadvantage: inability to determine recent changes in food intake, lists only common foods

A

Written account of foods and beverages consumed during a specific time period, usually consecutive days.
Includes: amounts, times, methods of prep, medication use, disease symptoms, physical activity
Disadvantages: recording process influences food intake, underreporting, requires motivation (time consuming), literacy required

Direct observation

A

Observation of meal trays or shelf inventories before and after eating (calorie count of foods actually eaten)
Disadvantage: only residential situations
