Anorexia nervosa
restriction of energy intake leading to significantly low body weight based
intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat
disturbance in the way one’s body weight or shape is experienced
lack of recognition of the seriousness of low body weight
2 types of anorexia nervosa
restricting type (low body weight by restricting or excessive exercise)
binge-eating/purging type (low body weight due to eating large amounts of food followed by self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives)
How do you treat anorexia nervosa?
deal with food and weight
deal with relationships with self and others
Bulimia nervosa
Binge eating in discrete periods of time, often have lack of control
Compensatory behaviors in response to binge eating in order to prevent weight gain (exercise, fasting, laxatives, vomiting)
How do you treat bulimia nervosa?
helping client gain control of behavior
Binge eating disorder
Pattern of binge eating (discrete, no control)
Must have 3 of…
1. eating very rapidly
2. eating until feeling uncomfortably full
3. eating large amounts of food when not hungry
4. eating alone due to embarrassment
5. feeling disgusted, depressed or very guilty
Psychological causes of disordered eating

What are vulnerable groups for eating disorders?
Athletes and dancers
- pressure to excel in sport
- “ideal” body weight
- focus on aesthetic appeal
- unhealthy weight loss dieting at a young age
Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder
lack of interest in or avoidance of food leading to inadequate nutritional/energy intake
leads to: weight loss, nutritional deficiency, dependence on enteral feeding, or oral nutritional supplements, interference with psychosocial functioning
Refeeding syndrome
When someone who has been malnourished starts eating again
