Step Length

Diabetes
Risk Factors for Amputation
Diabetes - 9%
Hypertension - 29%
BOTH - 36%
“Other” - 20%
Diabetes and high blood pressure make up a sizeable risk factor.
Principles for Choosing Amputation Level
1. Adequate circulation for wound healing
2. Preserve as many functional joints as possible
3. Adequate soft tissue coverage
4. Future functional prosthetic use and fitting
Residual Limb Pain
Pain that is located in the residual portion of the amputated limb.
Phantom Limb Pain
Pain that is located in the amputated portion of the limb, even though it is no longer there.
