a lab confirmed infection where a CVC is in place for more than 2 calendar days prior to a positive culture and is also in place the day of or day prior to culture
clinical defn of CLABSI
criteria for CLABSI?
clinical signs of infection: fever, rigors, AMS, hypotension
no alternate source of bloodstream infection
positive blood culture from a. peripheral vein with any one of the following: catheter tip, catheter, catheter drawn blood culture
steps in the management of suspected CLABSI?
STEP 1: consider a CLABSI in any patient with fever/WBCs
who has an intravascular catheter in place
STEP 2: If the patient has fever and only mild-moderately ill, the catheter does not need to be removed (yet)
-REMOVE catheter if septic,
STEP 3:
-Is the catheter tunneled or non-tunneled?
