Neuron Anatomy Flashcards
What does the Dendrite do?
receives synaptic messages from another neuron
transmits message to the soma
it then decides to fire an action potential depending on the amount of dendric inputs
Myelin Sheaths are…
made up of protein and fats
a protective layer over the axon and allows electrical messages to transmit quickly and efficiently
transmits up to 20x faster
The Axon is…
the long ‘tail’ that carries electrical messages from the soma through to the axon terminal
in the Peripheral NS axons bunch together to create nerves and can be as long as a meter
What do Axon Terminals do?
branches located at the end of the axon
they hold the buttons that release neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft
What is the Soma?
The cell body
produces the proteins in the other parts of the neurons
determines if neuron will be activated or not
What does the Nucleus do?
controls and regulates the activities of the cell
basically the cells brain
What is an Axon Button?
small knobs at the end of the axon terminals
when the terminal receives a message it secretes neurotransmitters
