Developmental Plasticity Flashcards
The sequence of developmental plasticity is…
Proliferation Migration Circuit formation Circuit pruning Myelination
What happens in proliferation?
The stage where the neurons in the foetus grow and divide
What do the cells do in the migration stage?
the newly formed cells move to the position they will occupy in the developed nervous system
What happens in circuit formation?
Neurons create circuits and neural pathways
axons will grow out and connect with other adjacent neurons
neural impulses with travel along new connections
What does the circuit pruning stage do?
occurs between ages 2-3
all circuits that aren’t being used enough will be ‘pruned’ or removed by the brain
What happens in myelination?
occurs from childhood to early adulthood (2-23)
myelin sheath is growing and insulating their axons to strengthen pathways
What is developmental plasticity?
Occurs during the foetus, babies, children and adolescents stages
process where neural pathways are created and managed
developmental plasticity will lessen with age
