Conscious and Unconscious Responses - Spinal Reflex Flashcards
What is a conscious response?
When the brain receives the sensory information and makes a conscious decision on what to do
Give an example of a conscious response…
Seeing or thinking about something, then deciding how to respond
What is an unconscious response?
An automatic response to sensory stimuli where your body reacts to on it’s own
Brain becomes aware after reaction has happened
Give an example of an unconscious response…
The spinal reflex causing you to pull your arm away from a flame before you’re even conscious about it
What is the spinal reflex?
The spinal reflex is an unlearned, automatic, and immediate reaction to dangerous stimuli
Spinal reflexes can enhance survival because the decision is made quicker than a conscious response
Is the spinal reflex conscious or unconscious?
Unconscious and automatic
What division of the Nervous System does the spinal reflex belong to?
occurs in the somatic nervous system
How does the Spinal Reflex work?
a dangerous sensory stimulus is detected and sent over to the spinal cord
it then reaches an interneuron within the spinal cord that makes a basic coordination to retract from the stimulus via the motor neurons
then the message is sent straight to the according muscles, while the information is passed up to the brain to be made conscious
