What is the definition of mental health?
the current state of ones psychological wellbeing and functioning
What is the mental health continuum?
Mentally healthy > Mental health problem > Mental disorder
Why do we use a mental health continuum?
peoples mental states fluctuates and can change
the continuum is used to measure where they are along the line
What are the characteristics of a ‘Mentally Healthy Person’ ?
high levels of functioning
can cope with stress/pressure of daily tasks
displays resilience
maintains healthy relationships
can regulate and express emotions healthily
What are characteristics of ‘high levels of functioning’ ?
Independence and ability to manage self
can make and achieve goals
develops mentally
What are the characteristics of ‘social wellbeing’ ?
they have strong connections with ppl
can reciprocate emotions
are a desired friend (calm/fun/empathetic)
What are the characteristics of ‘social wellbeing’ ?

balanced emotions of good and bad

the ability to overcome/bounce back from problems quickly
What is a ‘Mental Problem’ ?
Usually a temporary drop in wellbeing and ability to function optimally
has impact on daily functioning but isn’t severe
What are the characteristics of ‘Mental Health Problems’ ?
Not functioning at best level
Temporary impact on mental wellbeing
Amplified emotions and more stress
Difficulty concentrating and having irrational thoughts
What is a ‘Mental Health Disorder’ ?
A severe impact on ones ability to function correctly
Diagnosable
Can be treated with therapy or medication
Can be a continuous battle or one time episode
What are the characteristics of ‘Mental Health Disorders’ ?
High levels of distress
unable to independently do tasks
difficulty in self care
harder to meet environmental/social demands
display abnormal behaviour in society
What are the 3 D’s of a Mental Disorder?
Deviance- unusual actions against societal norms
Dysfunction- inability to function independently
Distress- extreme personal suffering
What is an example of a Mental Health Disorder?
Anxiety
Extreme distress that impacts ability to function and coping abilities
Irrational thoughts and panic attacks
