Long-Term Potentiation/Depression Flashcards
Define neural plasticity
the ability of the brain to change in response to experience
Define Synaptic Plasticity
refers to the ability of synapses between neurons to strengthen or weaken
What is Long Term Potentiation?
a persistent process that strengthens synapses making it a long lasting experience
What is Long Term Depression?
Long lasting decrease in strength of a synapse
Give an example of LTP…
repeatedly washing our hands everyday
after a week the synapses in our brain have strengthened allowing us to wash our hands very well
Give an example of LTD…
Forgetting to wash our hands for a few weeks
Since we aren’t repeating that action the strength of our synapse weakens and we are less efficient
