What is cerebellar ataxia?
A broad based stance with truncal instability during walking- falls to either side
Feet may be lifted too high
What is intension tremor?
Coarse low frequency oscillation
What is resting tremor?
Typically seen in Parkinsons’ disease- ‘Pit rolling’ action of the hand
What is essential tremor?
Occurs during voluntary contraction of the muscles and not associated with any other neurological disorder
What is festination?
Quick and short normal gait pattern seen in Parkinson’s
Makes patient seem to hurry but is an inefficient way of moving
What is Bradykinesia?
Slowness of movement Parkinson's key feature Mask like face Loss of arm swing Festination Difficult initiating and stopping an action
What is paralysis?
Loss of motor control in a part of the body
What is spasticity?
Cause by hypertonia (increased muscle tension)/stiffness of the muscles
Common in patients who recover from a stroke
Flexed adducted upper limb
What is automatism?
Lip smaking Chewing Swallowing Grasping Skin rubbing Repetitive and involuntary
What is Pose ictal?
Events after a seizure
Patients may be drowsy, confused, unable to speak, headache
