What are some important points to take during a history of someone with CKD?
Diabetes history Dialysis type and frequency, arteio-venous fistula? Medication Any bone related disorders? Anemia? Transplant?
What is an arterio-venous fistula?
An abnormal connection between an artery and vein- may be surgically created for haemodialysis
When should you get a Renal patient in for an appt?
Early in the morning the day after dialysis so the heparin will have worn off yet optimum kidney function.
Why are patients more susceptible to oral disease?
Because they have reduced resistance to infection
What should you avoid if the pt has a tendency to bleed severly?
Regional blocks
At what measure of haemoglobin contraindicates GA?
<10g/dl
What might become toxic in a renally impaired patient?
If the drugs fail to excrete or metabolise properly
What drugs should be reduced in the presence of CKD?
Aciclovir
Amoxicillin
Erythromycin
What should never be prescribed with renal disease?
NSAIDS
What might be some oral side effects to renal disease?
Loss of lamina dura
Osteoporosis
Saliva gland swelling
What are typical medications for a renal patient to be on?
Anti hypertensives
Anti coagulants
Immunosuppressives
