Neurology - nose Flashcards
1
Q
How are odours detected?
A
Orthonasal - air to the nose. Sniffing draws air in via turbinates
Retronasal - chewing food
2
Q
How is the odour translated?
A
Dissolved in a layer of mucus membrane, which has cilia. These cilia have receipt cells that generate an impulse
3
Q
What does the odour impulse travel to?
A
It travels through a foramen to base of skull. These nerves make up CNII (olfactory) which then converge to make the olfactory bulb (part of frontal lobe)
