Alimentary - sinuses Flashcards
What is the external nose?
Rostral end of the nasal cavities, separated by nasal septum
What is the philtrum?
Line between the nose, flexible and cartilagenous.
What is the vestibule?
Continuous with the external nose and covered by mucosa, nasolacrimal duct opens here. Between teeth and cheek.
What are the nasal cavities?
Twinned pair of cavities, size relative to head conformation. Contain turbinate bones covered by mucous and are highly vascularised
What are paranasal sinuses and their function?
Air spaces formed by the break down of turbinate bones, connected to the nasal cavity by small hollows called meatuses.
Lightening head
Supporting immune for nasal
Increasing resonance
Humidifying inhaled air
How many paranasal sinuses are there?
There are 4 paired:
Maxillary
Frontal
Sphenoid (human)
Ethmoid (human)
What is the frontal paranasal sinus?
Opens into nasal caity in ethmoid meatus (in horses its via the maxillary)
What is the maxillary sinus?
Opens into nasal cavity within caudal part of upper jaw, associated with hard palate, sphenoid bones and ventral concha as well as orbit.
What are meatus’s ?
Beneath the attachment of each turbinate bone is the meatus, which the orbit and paranasal sinus drains into
What are the functions of the meatus?
It is responsible for the majority of airflow direction, humidification, heating and filtering of air inhaled through the nose
What are the conchae?
Folds of the nasal septum, around the hard palate, creating the meatuses.
What meatuses are there?
Dorsal - olfactory mucosa
Medial - access to sinuses (smaller)
Ventral - leads to pharynx
