Alimentary - equine and swine anatomy Flashcards
What is the equine stomach made up of
Tight cardiac and pyloric sphincter so no vomiting
Two regions
Non - glandular - fundic
Glandular - body and pyloric antrum
Margo pilactus between
Why cant you palapate the stomach? EQUINE
Entirely in the costal arch
What is the caecum like? EQUINE
Very large and comma shaped, this is where all fermentation occurs.
Where does the caecum lie? EQUINE
Base - lies in dorsal cavity, right to the midline
Apex - ventrally close to xiphoid cartilage
Folds over the ascending colon
How does the ileum, caecum and colon join?
Divided into:
Ileocaecal orifice - ileum and caecum, left hand side
Caecocolic orifice - caecum and ascending colon, on cranial aspect of base
What is the shape of the colon? EQUINE
Ascending is elongated in U shape
Transverse short and crosses left to right just cranial of mesentery
Descending is longated and coiled like SI, two taeniae coils
What is the liver like? EQUINE
Small and no gall bladder with 4 lobes
Renal rossa/caudate
Right lobe
Quadrate lobe
Left lobe
What is the spleen like? EQUINE
Large and triangular
Connected to stomach by the gastrosplenic ligament
What is the pancreas like? EQUINE
Triangular and less lobulated than in dogs
What can be palpated rectally? EQUINE
Descending colon
Caudal border of spleen
Nephrosplenic ligament
Caudal pole of left kidney
Root of mesentery
Caecum base and ventral taenia
Pelvic flexure
SI loops (if distended)
What is colic? EQUINE
Abdominal pain caused by:
-Stretching of gut wall
- Tension in mesentry
-Iscemia
-Inflammation
-Gut ulcers
-Changes in diet
What is a common cause of Ischaemia? EQUINE
The epiploic foramen is a small hole in the omenta. A segment of the small intestina can come through this,
The colon can also become trapped over the nephrosplenic ligament
What is a difference about the pharynx? (PIGS)
Soft palate and epiglottis make contact
What is the stomach like? (PIGS)
Simple stomach with glandular and aglandular region.
Extra thick pyloric sphincter
What is the caecum like? (PIGS)
Mildly enlarged, sitting on the left-hand side of the body
